Lagos to Crack Down on Environmental Violations Starting July 1.

The Lagos State Government is taking a firm stand against environmental violations. Starting July 1, 2025, anyone caught dumping waste illegally, littering the streets, or defacing the envir

onment could face a fine of up to ₦250,000 or a jail term of up to three months.

The announcement was made by Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who emphasized that the days of ignoring environmental abuse in Lagos are over. “From July 1, full enforcement begins,” Wahab stated on the government’s official X account. “Offenders will face stiff penalties.”

This is part of a broader initiative to clean up Lagos and make the city more sustainable. The crackdown will also see the enforcement of a ban on single-use plastics, a major contributor to blocked drainage systems and environmental degradation.

The ministry has already made progress, with over 3,000 environmental offenders arrested in recent months. Surveillance and public education campaigns are also being expanded to ensure compliance.

In addition to illegal dumping, the government is reinforcing its stance on other long-standing bans, including:

The use of cart pushers for waste collection
  Public defecation
  Unauthorized street trading

Wahab urged residents to play their part by properly bagging their waste and handing it over to the assigned PSP (Private Sector Participation) waste operators, instead of dumping it in gutters or road medians.

This is not just about penalties,” he said.  It’s about securing a cleaner, healthier Lagos for ourselves and future generations. Let’s celebrate the coming Sallah with a renewed sense of responsibility.”

Lagosians are being called upon to embrace this change, not just to avoid fines, but to be part of a collective effort to improve the city’s environment.
