Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Brother Laid to Rest in Portugal.

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his young

er brother, Andre Silva, were buried on Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, following their tragic deaths in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025.

The brothers, aged 28 and 25, died when their car veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and caught fire. The tragedy occurred just days after Jota had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. Hours before the crash, Jota had shared a video from their June 22 wedding.

The funeral, held at the Mother Church of Gondomar, was attended by family, friends, teammates, and officials. Portuguese national team players such as Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Danilo Pereira, and Joao Felix were present, as was national team coach Roberto Martinez. Liverpool players, including Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, also attended, with Van Dijk carrying a red floral tribute shaped like a Liverpool jersey with Jota’s number 20.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot and Uruguay international Darwin Nunez joined the family at a wake held the night before. Former managers and football authorities, including Jorge Mendes, Porto president Andre Villas-Boas, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also paid their respects.

Jota’s passing has deeply affected the football community. The Portuguese Football Federation’s president Pedro Proenca described him as “an icon of Portuguese football talent.” Memorials were held at Jota’s football academy, where tributes included candles, flowers, and jerseys. A child’s handwritten note read, “Thank you, Diogo Jota.”

Liverpool lowered flags to half-mast and created a condolence area outside Anfield, where fans laid scarves, shirts, flowers, and messages. A minute’s silence was observed during Club World Cup and Women’s Euro 2025 matches in his honor.

British rock band Oasis paid tribute with a performance of “Live Forever” during a concert in Cardiff.

Reports suggest Jota had been en route to the port city of Santander to catch a ferry to England, avoiding air travel due to a recent lung surgery. Liverpool postponed the start of pre-season training for several players, and teammate Mohamed Salah admitted the tragedy made him fearful to return.

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot urged unity, saying the club must come together to support one another during this difficult time.

Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 under Jurgen Klopp, was praised by the former manager as a cherished member of the team.
