Longest-Reigning Monarchs in Yoruba Land.
Despite the changes in Nigeria’s p
olitical and social environment, traditional rulers in Yoruba land continue to play a vital role in preserving culture, heritage, and community unity. Several monarchs have maintained their thrones for decades, becoming symbols of continuity and leadership. Here are some of the longest-reigning Yoruba monarchs:
1. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona – Awujale of Ijebuland
Oba Adetona became the Awujale of Ijebuland on April 2, 1960. Now in his 65th year on the throne, he is one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. Known for his bold opinions and advocacy for his people, his reign spans Nigeria’s evolution from colonial rule through military regimes to democracy. He is widely respected for championing the Ijebu identity and welfare.
2. Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III – Late Alaafin of Oyo
The late Oba Adeyemi III ruled for 51 years, from January 14, 1971, until his death in April 2022. He was a renowned authority on Yoruba culture and history, often engaging in national conversations. His leadership was instrumental in fostering Yoruba unity and preserving traditional institutions.
3. Oba Samuel Omotunde Aladejare – Deji of Akure
Oba Aladejare ascended the throne in 1957 and ruled for over five decades before stepping down in 1999. His reign is remembered for peace, stability, and community development in Akure. He was deeply committed to cultural preservation and local progress.
4. Oba Oladunni Oyewumi – Late Soun of Ogbomoso
Oba Oyewumi ruled Ogbomoso from 1973 until his passing in December 2021, spending nearly 48 years on the throne. His tenure brought significant development to the town, and he was admired for his calm, disciplined leadership.
Why Their Reigns Last Long
Unlike elected officials, Yoruba monarchs are viewed as spiritual leaders and guardians of tradition. Their role goes beyond governance—they embody the soul and history of their communities. Once enthroned, they typically serve for life. Long reigns are considered a sign of divine favor and social stability within the kingdom.
