LP – Disowns Datti Baba-Ahmed’s Comments, Raises Concerns Over Threats from Abia Governor Otti

The Labour Party has publicly distanced itself from comments made by its former vice-presidential candidate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, labeling his remarks as “undemocratic” and potentially inciting unrest against Nigeria’s established government.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, the party criticized Baba-Ahmed’s reference to the Tinubu administration as “questionably constitutional.” These comments were reportedly made during a meeting held on April 9, 2025, in Abuja, allegedly organized by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Dr. Abayomi described Baba-Ahmed’s words as inflammatory, noting, “This statement is clearly inciting and a call for mass action against a constituted authority.” He emphasized the need to avoid provoking public sentiment against a legally recognized government.

The party referenced Baba-Ahmed’s recent interview, in which he claimed government appointments were “fake” and “illegal,” accusing officials of misusing public funds and undermining the nation.

Although the Labour Party contested the 2023 presidential election and lost to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it affirmed that it had accepted the Supreme Court’s ruling “not out of satisfaction, but due to the finality of the judgment,” and urged all Nigerians to support national unity and stability.

The party also warned against comments that could destabilize the country, drawing parallels to the Arab Spring, and cautioned against underestimating youth-driven movements.

Further criticisms were directed at Governor Otti, who allegedly declared a “dooms day” for the party’s leadership and threatened to remove them from office. Dr. Abayomi accused Otti of acting as though the party were his personal enterprise and warned against any harm coming to party leaders.

The statement also linked threats made by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, to Governor Otti, suggesting that recent pressure on the party’s leadership was being orchestrated.

The Labour Party called on National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other security agencies to take immediate steps to protect its national officers, holding Governor Otti responsible should any harm come to them.
