Manchester United 5-4 Lyon (Agg 7-6): Harry Maguire scores decisive goal to complete stunning extra-time comeback after trailing 4-2 in Europa League quarter-final.

Harry Maguire completed a remarkable turnaround as Manchester United edged Lyon 5-4 at Old Trafford, securing a 7-6 aggregate win in a dramatic Europa League quarter-final. United had initially taken a 2-0 lead but found themselves trailing 4-2 deep into extra-time before staging an unforgettable comeback.

In one of the most thrilling European matches in the club’s history, United looked in control early on, only to concede four goals—including two while Lyon were down to 10 men. Just when the tie seemed lost, Maguire’s powerful header completed an extraordinary recovery, sending the Old Trafford crowd into raptures.

The win sets up a semi-final clash against Athletic Club, keeping United’s hopes alive for both a European trophy and Champions League qualification. More than anything, it gave fans a night to remember.

Rubem Amorim’s side appeared to have seized control after Manuel Ugarte opened the scoring and Diogo Dalot added a second. Alejandro Garnacho had a chance to extend the lead but missed, leaving the door open for Lyon.

Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico brought Lyon level, and even after Tolisso was sent off, Rayan Cherki fired them ahead in extra-time. Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty made it 4-2, seemingly sealing the tie.

But United weren’t finished. Casemiro earned a penalty that Bruno Fernandes converted, and Kobbie Mainoo scored a stunning equaliser in the 120th minute. With the momentum fully shifted, Maguire—pushed up front in a desperate move—headed in the winner, capping off a truly legendary night. The scenes at the final whistle were euphoric, with fans and players soaking in one of the club’s all-time classic European victories.
