Maresca’s Defining Final: A Clash of History, Emotion, and Legacy.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is preparing for a deeply personal and professional moment as he leads his team into the Conference League final against Real Betis — a match that brings him face-to-face with his former mentor, Manuel Pellegrini.
Maresca, once a midfielder under Pellegrini at Malaga, credits the Chilean with inspiring him to pursue coaching. Their relationship continued when Pellegrini brought Maresca onto his staff at West Ham in 2018. Now, they meet as opponents in Wroclaw, Poland, each aiming to win a European trophy.
While Maresca holds deep respect for Pellegrini, he expects a hostile reception from Betis fans, having been a fan favorite at their city rivals Sevilla during his playing days.
A Mentor’s Influence
Maresca has often spoken about how Pellegrini shaped his coaching philosophy — especially the idea of treating players like family. “He taught me to treat my players like sons,” Maresca said, reflecting on their mentor-apprentice bond.
Pellegrini also acknowledged Maresca’s growth and influence from other football minds like Pep Guardiola, under whom Maresca later worked at Manchester City. There, Maresca helped introduce tactical innovations that contributed to City’s historic treble in 2023.
A Rivalry Rekindled
Though now Chelsea’s head coach, Maresca remains a polarizing figure in Seville. During his four-year stint with Sevilla, he helped them win major trophies and famously scored in a derby win over Betis — a memory unlikely to endear him to Betis supporters during the final.
Despite personal connections to Seville, Maresca made it clear: “I want to win this for Chelsea.
Chelsea’s Future Hinges on Stability
Regardless of the final’s outcome, Chelsea plan to stick with Maresca, who is under a five-year contract as part of a long-term project focused on stability and identity. The club is aligning its academy and sister club Strasbourg to adopt Maresca’s style, aiming to build a seamless development pipeline.
Chelsea also have transfer plans in place, prioritizing a striker and a left winger, and potentially adding a central defender.
A Chance at History
This final carries weight beyond just silverware. Winning would mean Chelsea becomes the first club to win all three major European competitions, having already claimed the Champions League and Europa League.
It’s a final we want to win at any cost,” Maresca said. “It’s been a good season, but it can become a great one with a win and a strong league finish.
For Maresca, this match is more than a chance at a trophy — it’s a culmination of a journey shaped by mentors, rivalries, and the dream of building something lasting at Chelsea.
