Medvedev suffers surprising early exit at Wimbledon.
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday, losing to France’s Benjamin
Bonzi.
Medvedev, who had reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in the last two years, was defeated by world number 64 Bonzi in a match lasting over three hours under hot conditions on Court Two. The final score was 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2.
This marks the first time in seven Wimbledon appearances that Medvedev has not progressed beyond the opening round.
The 29-year-old, who won the US Open in 2021 and has been a finalist in six Grand Slam tournaments, has struggled this year in major events, having exited early at the Australian Open and French Open before his Wimbledon loss.
Last year, Medvedev defeated top seed Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon quarter-finals before falling to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semis.
Bonzi described the win as special, saying, “This is my first top-10 win at a Grand Slam. I love this tournament and Daniil is a great player who has reached two semi-finals here. I knew it would be a tough match, but sometimes it’s better to face a player like him in the first round. I’m very happy with this victory.”
