Messi Faces Former Club PSG in Club World Cup Showdown.
Lionel Messi is set for a high-stakes reunion with Paris Saint-Ge
rmain as his current team, Inter Miami, faces the reigning European champions in the Club World Cup round of 16.
Inter Miami advanced to this stage after finishing second in Group A, highlighted by a stunning free-kick from Messi against Porto. Despite a surprise loss to Botafogo earlier in the tournament, PSG topped Group B and now prepare to take on their former star.
Messi has a rich history with PSG from his time at Barcelona, having faced them 10 times in UEFA Champions League action. His record includes four wins, three losses, and three draws. Their first encounter dates back to the 2012–13 quarter-finals, where Messi scored in a 2–2 draw before Barcelona advanced on away goals.
In the 2014–15 season, Messi scored twice in the group stage against PSG, then helped Barcelona to a 5–1 aggregate win in the quarter-finals. He later played a key role in Barcelona’s famous 6–1 comeback victory in 2017. In 2021, he scored in both legs against PSG, but Barcelona were eliminated after a dominant performance from Kylian Mbappé.
Now, Messi returns to face his former club on a different stage, leading an Inter Miami side that is drawing notable viewership. The Club World Cup, expanded and held in the summer, is generating U.S. TV audiences similar to the Premier League. Matches broadcast on TNT Sports have averaged 360,000 viewers, while Premier League games on USA Network averaged 394,000 this past season.
Three of the top seven English-language broadcasts on TNT Sports featured Inter Miami, with their 2–2 draw against Palmeiras pulling in 676,000 viewers. The team’s group-stage matches against Al Ahly (0–0) and Porto (2–1 win) also drew strong numbers.
Tomorrow’s clash in Atlanta promises to be one of the tournament’s most-watched games, as Messi takes on PSG winners of the most recent UEFA Champions League—in a headline matchup.
