Monarchs Crowned by Governor Seyi Makinde in Six Years.

As Governor Seyi Makinde nears the end of his second term in office, he has crowned eight prominent traditional rulers in Oyo State. With the likely ascension of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland, the total number is expected to reach nine.

Makinde confirmed the recent death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who was installed as Olubadan in 2024. Prior to that, he had crowned several key monarchs across the state. Below is a summary of the major royal appointments made during Makinde’s tenure:

1. Oba Lekan Balogun (42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland)
Installed on March 11, 2022, following the passing of Oba Saliu Adetunji in January 2022 at age 93.

2. Oba Ghandi Olaoye (Soun of Ogbomoso)
Crowned on December 21, 2023. A pastor by profession, he is the 21st Soun and descends from the Baiyewuwon ruling family.

3. Oba Owolabi Olakulehin (43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland)
Installed on July 12, 2024, but has since passed away.

4. Oba Abimbola Owoade I (46th Alaafin of Oyo)
Crowned on April 5, 2025, at Olivet Baptist High School. He succeeded Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who died in April 2022.

5. Oba Samuel Adebayo (Eleruwa of Eruwa)
Installed on June 28, 2025. Although previously deposed by a Supreme Court ruling in 2019, his appointment was reapproved in March 2025 following a legal resolution.

6. Oba Sakiru Oyewole Akanni Oyelere (Onifiditi of Fiditi)
Crowned on July 3, 2024.

7. Oba Cornelius Taiwo Oladokun (Alaawe of Awe)
Crowned on July 5, 2024.

8. Oba Titiloye Oyekanmi (Elempe of Tapa)
Installed on July 8, 2024.

9. Oba Rashidi Ladoja (Incoming Olubadan)
The former governor of Oyo State is expected to be crowned as the 44th Olubadan, pending completion of traditional rites and formal confirmation.
