MTN Invests Over $240 Million in Lagos Data Centre to Boost AI and Cloud Services.

MTN Nigeria has committed more than \$240 million to build a new 9MW data centre in Ikeja, Lagos, named after the late CEO Sifiso Dabengwa. The project will b

e completed in two phases, with Phase One featuring a 4.5MW Tier 3 data centre costing about \$120 million, including cloud infrastructure, set to launch on July 1, 2025.

Data centres are vital to digital economies as they securely store and manage data and support local content from global platforms like Meta and Google. They also provide resilience against disruptions, such as last year’s major internet outage in West Africa caused by undersea cable damage.

MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Dr. Karl Toriola, described the facility as the largest pre-fabricated modular data centre in Nigeria, with 96 pre-fabricated containers and about 1,500 rack capacity across three floors. The centre’s modular design includes flexible power and cooling systems.

According to Toriola, the data centre will significantly transform Nigeria’s tech ecosystem by offering services on a pay-as-you-use basis priced in Naira. It aims to enhance Nigeria’s data sovereignty by ensuring local data hosting and protection, in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The facility is expected to reduce business costs by providing affordable, local data hosting that complies with NDPC regulations, benefiting both large corporations and small enterprises.

Lynda Saint-Nwafor, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, noted that Phase One infrastructure cost \$100 million, with an additional \$20 million invested in cloud services. She added that the centre will reduce latency and improve data computing experiences, allowing users worldwide to access cloud services for solution development.

MTN’s Senior Consultant for Enterprise Solutions, Ifeanyi Otudor, said the data centre supports high data traffic from sectors like fintech and government platforms. It also meets co-location needs for enterprises and government bodies that prefer outsourcing data management to specialists. The centre is powered by robust grid transformers and standby generators to ensure continuous operation.
