NAFDAC Cautions Against Excessive Use of Hydroquinone in Skincare Products.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to consumers about the health risks associated with the use of bleaching creams containing high levels of hydroquinone.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), NAFDAC’s Bauchi State Coordinator, Mr. Hamis Yahaya, explained that hydroquinone, a chemical commonly used to lighten the skin and treat conditions like melasma and age spots, should not exceed 2% concentration in cosmetic products.
Yahaya emphasized that while melanin—the pigment responsible for darker skin—naturally protects against harmful radiation, overuse of hydroquinone can damage the skin and lead to serious health problems, including cancer.
He also cautioned against the use of skin creams mixed by unqualified individuals, noting that improper formulations further increase health risks.
“Using products with more than two percent hydroquinone is dangerous. Consumers must be careful, and untrained people should not mix creams. The effects may not show immediately but can become serious over time,” Yahaya warned.
He urged the media to help spread awareness about the dangers of harmful cosmetic products and encouraged the public to prioritize safety when choosing skincare items.
