Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Arraigned for Alleged Defamation of Akpabio, Yahaya Bello.
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan appea
red before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to face defamation charges filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
She is accused of making damaging statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The three-count charge alleges that she knowingly made false claims intended to harm their reputations. These include allegations that both men conspired to harm her, and that Akpabio was connected to the death of Miss Iniubong Umoren.
When the charges were read in court, Akpoti-Uduaghan pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution, represented by David Kaswe, requested that she be remanded in custody. However, her lawyer, Professor Roland Otaru, successfully applied for bail, arguing that she posed no flight risk, would not interfere with investigations, and was presumed innocent under the law.
Justice Chisoba Oji granted her bail in the sum of ₦50 million, with one surety who must own property within the court’s jurisdiction.
The trial is scheduled to begin on September 23, 2025.
