NERC Sets December 31 Deadline for Power Generation Companies to Integrate with National Grid System.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated that all electricity generation companies (GenCos) connected to the national grid must fully integrate with the Supervisory

Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) by December 31, 2025.

SCADA/EMS serves as a critical infrastructure for monitoring and managing grid operations in real time. It enables automated controls, early fault detection, and continuous monitoring of electricity generation and transmission.

According to the new regulation—titled  “Order on the Mandatory Integration of Grid-Connected Generating Units into the New SCADA/EMS for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry” failure to comply will lead to financial penalties and possible disconnection from the national grid.

The directive, effective from May 22, was signed by NERC Chairman Garba Sanusi and Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni. It requires GenCos to provide real-time operational data including active and reactive power, frequency, voltage, circuit breaker status, and fault alarms.

NERC explained that this move is intended to improve grid reliability, enhance coordination across the electricity value chain, and prevent system collapses—many of which have occurred in recent years due to poor communication among generation, transmission, and distribution entities.

The order compels power plants to install SCADA-compatible data acquisition equipment and ensure compatibility with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)’s communication protocols. This integration allows the Nigerian Independent System Operator remote access to necessary operational data.

As outlined in Sections 12.2 and 20.16 of the national Grid Code, all generation companies must enable real-time communication with the National Control Centre through SCADA systems. This includes installing remote terminal units and interface cabinets in their control rooms and maintaining the necessary wiring and signaling connections.

NERC also noted that the TCN’s SCADA/EMS and telecommunications project has advanced significantly, making this integration both timely and essential for a fully functional and efficient national electricity grid.

The ultimate goal, the Commission said, is to boost operational transparency and reliability across Nigeria’s power supply system by ensuring that all generation units are digitally visible and responsive in real time.
