New Delhi Bans Fuel Sales to Older Vehicles in Bid to Reduce Pollution.

On July 1, 2025, New Delhi implemented a new measure aimed at reducing severe air pollution by banning fuel sales to older vehicles. Under the new rule, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are no longer allowed to refuel in the city.

Although a 2018 Supreme Court ruling already prohibited such vehicles from operating on city roads, enforcement has been weak. Authorities estimate that over six million of these vehicles are still in use within the capital.

To strengthen compliance, police and municipal staff have been stationed at fuel stations. Cameras that can recognize license plates and loudspeakers have been installed to help enforce the ban. Officers at the stations have been directed to contact vehicle scrappers if prohibited cars attempt to refuel.

The restriction is part of broader efforts to combat New Delhi’s persistent air quality crisis. The city frequently ranks among the most polluted in the world, with winter smog often pushing PM2.5 pollutant levels far beyond the World Health Organization’s safe limits—sometimes exceeding them by over 60 times.

Starting in November, the ban will be expanded to surrounding satellite towns, affecting a region with a population of more than 32 million.

According to a 2019 study published in The Lancet, air pollution contributed to 1.67 million premature deaths in India.

Each winter, emissions from vehicles and industries combine with smoke from agricultural fires in neighboring states, creating dense and hazardous smog. Weather conditions, including cooler temperatures and stagnant air, worsen the problem by trapping pollutants close to the ground.

So far, limited measures such as fuel restrictions and spraying water into the air have failed to significantly improve the city’s air quality.
