Nigeria and Saint Lucia Move to Establish Diplomatic Relations.

During his state visit to Saint Lucia, President Bola Tinubu and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced their commitment to establishing formal diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean

nation. This agreement was made during a courtesy visit by President Tinubu to the Prime Minister’s residence in Castries on June 29, 2025.

In a statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality shown to his delegation. He described Saint Lucians as “valued friends and brothers,” emphasizing the deep historical and cultural connections between Africa and the Caribbean.

      Strengthening a Historical Bond

President Tinubu underscored the importance of building on shared heritage to forge new partnerships in trade, tourism, education, cultural exchange, and investment. He emphasized that stronger ties would lead to improved consular services and greater mutual understanding between both nations.

“This is more than diplomacy,” Tinubu said. “It’s about building a bridge between Africa and the Caribbean—a bridge to prosperity, solidarity, and sustainable development.”

He also reiterated Nigeria’s willingness to work closely with Saint Lucia on global issues, including climate change, disaster response, and sustainable financing, while also supporting the unique concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in international forums.

      Saint Lucia’s Perspective

Prime Minister Pierre shared his optimism about the future of Nigeria–Saint Lucia relations. Reflecting on the long-standing connection between the two countries, he noted the historical contribution of Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian who served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice from 1975 to 1979.

Pierre identified key areas for collaboration, including agriculture, education, health, tourism, and infrastructure. He praised Nigeria’s legacy in education and highlighted Saint Lucia’s goal of having at least one university graduate per household. He expressed interest in deeper academic partnerships and cultural exchange, noting Saint Lucia’s emergence as a global center for festivals, particularly the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival.

“The cultural ties between our people are undeniable they are in our DNA,” Pierre stated.

      Global Context and Shared Vision

Pierre emphasized the importance of stronger South-South cooperation, especially at a time of growing uncertainty in international alliances. He pointed out that the shifting dynamics in global power highlight the need for nations like Saint Lucia and Nigeria to build new, mutually beneficial relationships.

“We must create and strengthen ties where none previously existed,” Pierre said. “Your visit is a timely opportunity to do just that.”

      Further Engagements

President Tinubu also met with Saint Lucia’s Governor-General, Cyril Charles, to discuss areas of shared interest under the Commonwealth framework. The conversation focused on climate action, technical cooperation, and tackling socioeconomic challenges.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment, Tinubu highlighted opportunities to deepen economic cooperation in sectors like agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing, while continuing to advocate for the needs of smaller nations on the global stage.
