Nigeria to Reactivate Dormant Oil Assets to Boost Production — Lokpobiri.
The Federal Government has reiterated its resolve to revive inacti
ve and underutilized oil assets as a key strategy for increasing national crude oil production.
Speaking during a visit to TotalEnergies’ headquarters in Paris and its research facility in Pau, France, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized that reviving dormant oil fields is essential for Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.
According to a statement from the Minister’s media aide, Nneamaka Okafor, the visit was part of broader engagements with industry stakeholders. It comes as TotalEnergies prepares to activate several oil blocks, including those awarded in recent bid rounds and previously held but inactive assets.
Senator Lokpobiri stated that President Bola Tinubu has clearly directed oil companies to restart production in dormant fields. “The President has made it clear—these inactive assets must be brought back into operation,” he said. The ministry, he added, is fully committed to supporting this goal through regulatory oversight and collaboration with operators.
At TotalEnergies’ facility in Pau, the Minister toured the Smart Room and support center, where he observed advanced monitoring and exploration technologies. In Paris, discussions centered on regulatory and operational strategies to help unlock key oil blocks.
TotalEnergies’ Head of Exploration and Production, Nicolas Terraz, welcomed Nigeria’s policy support. “We are committed to using our expertise and resources to restart production in these strategic fields,” he said, describing the collaboration as a joint effort to enhance energy output for mutual benefit.
The Nigerian government has pledged to provide necessary policy, financial, and technical support to companies working to revive dormant oil assets. This initiative is seen as critical for job creation, increasing government revenue, and strengthening national energy independence.
