NiMet Warns of Threats to Lives, Property from Extreme Weather.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has cautioned that upcoming extreme weather events could lead to loss of lives, displacement of communities, and damage to infrastructure, buildings,
farmlands, and other assets.
Speaking at a sensitisation forum in Abuja organized in collaboration with First Green White Resources, NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the urgent need for public preparedness in the face of increasing climate variability driven by climate change.
Anosike stressed that while NiMet continues to improve the accuracy of its forecasts, effective communication with the public is equally vital. He called on the media to play a more active role in sharing weather-related information that could guide disaster readiness, farming decisions, and aviation safety.
He stated, “The media’s role in disseminating our forecasts directly impacts how well people can prepare for and respond to weather threats. Our ability to serve the public aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, and we are committed to staff development and improved service delivery.”
Also speaking at the event, NiMet’s Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Prof. Vincent Weli, announced that the agency had signed a memorandum of understanding with MTN to deliver weather alerts directly to mobile phone users. The system is currently 70% complete.
Weli added that while MTN is the initial partner, NiMet plans to collaborate with other telecom providers to ensure weather information reaches Nigerians in accessible languages, regardless of their mobile network.
