NLA Condemns Call to Divert National Library Funds to ‘Feed Hungry Nigerians’

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) has condemned a statement attributed to Chief Olabode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in which he reportedly advised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to divert funds raised for the completion of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) headquarters to feed hungry Nigerians.

In a press release signed by its President, Dr Lawal Umar, and Secretary, Dr A. U. Kalu, the association described the suggestion as irresponsible, reckless, and grossly misinformed, warning against the politicisation of critical national development projects.

While acknowledging the difficult economic conditions facing many Nigerians, the association stated that diverting funds meant for the National Library would undermine the country’s intellectual and educational future.

The NLA emphasised that the National Library is not a luxury project but a national imperative, noting that its core responsibilities include preserving Nigeria’s intellectual and cultural heritage, supporting education and research, promoting lifelong learning, and serving as a hub for literacy development and citizen empowerment.
