No Bra, No Exam”: OOU Students Speak Out Against Alleged Harassment.
A recent enforcement policy at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, has sparked outrage among students, following reports that female security personnel were physically inspecting stud
ents for bras before allowing them into examination halls.
The policy widely referred to as “No Bra, No Exam” was reportedly enforced at the university’s ICT Centre at the start of second-semester exams on June 16. According to students, the approach used by security officials went beyond dress code enforcement and veered into harassment.
A viral video showed female students being physically touched by security staff to confirm whether they were wearing bras. The footage quickly drew criticism online, with many calling the practice a clear case of sexual misconduct under the guise of discipline.
“The policy really took a toll on me, mentally and medically,” said one 200-level student who chose to remain anonymous. “I have a health condition that makes it painful to wear tight clothing. I explained this, but was still denied entry. I had to borrow a bra from a stranger just to sit for my exam.”
Another student, Kemi, acknowledged the importance of decency in student conduct but condemned the method of enforcement:
“Touching students to check for bras is not discipline it’s harassment. Undergarments are a private matter and should never be a condition for accessing education.”
Student Union Responds
The Student Union Government (SUG) President, Muizz Olarenwaju Olatunji, responded via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He explained that the dress code policy at OOU has long existed as a means of promoting modesty and maintaining a distraction-free academic environment. However, he emphasized that current enforcement strategies are being reviewed.
“We’re in talks with university authorities to find better, more respectful ways of upholding dress standards without compromising students’ dignity,” Olatunji said.
No Official Statement from University Yet
Efforts to obtain a formal statement from the school’s Public Relations Officer, Niyi Oduwole, were unsuccessful. Calls did not connect, and messages sent were not returned as of the time of this report.
The Bigger Picture
While institutions are within their rights to uphold standards of decency, the **implementation of such policies must respect personal boundaries and human dignity. Students have made it clear: dress codes should never override the right to education or justify invasive behavior.
As public scrutiny intensifies, many are now calling on OOU’s administration to reconsider its approach and ensure that all future enforcement is carried out with empathy, professionalism, and respect for students’ rights.
