Obidients Can Support Obi, I’m Free to Back Atiku – Dele Momodu.
Renowned journalist and publisher of Ovation magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, has reaffirmed his support for Atiku Abubakar as his preferred candidate to lead the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Momodu said that while he supports Atiku, supporters of other candidates such as the “Obidients” backing Peter Obi are free to campaign for their own candidates.
“My choice is Atiku, just like Obidients have every right to support Obi, or Amaechi’s supporters can back Amaechi. It’s all part of democratic engagement,” he said.
Momodu argued that Atiku remains the most formidable candidate among the current presidential hopefuls, especially within the opposition.
He added that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is uncomfortable with Atiku’s growing popularity, which is why, in his view, they prefer a southern candidate to emerge from the ADC.
He cited the lack of a strong southern contender and mentioned that although Nyesom Wike once had a chance, his support for APC’s Bola Tinubu has taken him out of the race.
“When you start seeing smear campaigns against Atiku, it shows that the other side feels threatened,” he said.
Momodu emphasized that party primaries should be the platform for all aspirants to prove their popularity, calling for a democratic process where all camps are free to compete.
“I’ve never stopped anyone from supporting Obi. He’s my good friend and a capable leader. If you ask me who could lead a coalition, I’d say Obi is one of the strongest options. But the process must be democratic,” he said.
He urged all factions to campaign for their preferred candidates ahead of the ADC primaries whether they support Obi, Atiku, or Amaechi stating that only fair competition will ensure legitimacy.
Momodu concluded by describing Atiku as a strong example of the kind of leadership Nigeria needs.
