Okowa Responds to Saraki Over Defection Criticism.

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has dismissed criticism from former Senate President Bukola Saraki regarding his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that Saraki lacks the moral authority to comment on the matter.

On Monday, Okowa, along with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other key Delta State political figures, officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC. Saraki reacted strongly, describing Okowa’s defection—especially after serving as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in 2023—as “shocking” and reflective of Nigeria’s political decline.

In response, Okowa, during an interview on Arise TV, said Saraki’s criticism was hypocritical given his own past defection from the PDP to the APC and eventual return.

Someone like Saraki, who has moved between the PDP and APC, should not be the one speaking on my defection,” Okowa said. “He has switched parties more than once, so I don’t think he holds the moral ground to judge my decision.”

Okowa emphasized that the mass defection in Delta was a unified move by political stakeholders, driven by ongoing internal crises within the PDP. He added that recent actions and communications from the party’s leadership made it clear that the PDP no longer aligned with the state’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

He concluded that the decision to join the APC was made after serious deliberation and reflected a collective shift, not a personal political gamble.
