Our Sense of Geography Has Changed Due to Wike’s Projects — FCT Residents
As Kubwa residents appeal for development.

Marking the second anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced that 19 projects have been completed and are ready for inauguration.

Although initially met with skepticism due to decades of underdevelopment, the public witnessed President Tinubu inaugurate several life-changing projects across the FCT. Due to the president’s tight schedule, Wike reduced the number of projects to be commissioned alongside him from 19 to 17, promising to handle the remainder independently.

The first to be inaugurated was the renovated Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC) on June 10.

President Tinubu personally commissioned five of the 11 projects inaugurated so far. Others were commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on the president’s behalf, while the FCT administration is handling the final two.

Among the projects commissioned are the renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, key arterial roads including Shehu Shagari Way and Wole Soyinka Way, the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) Stage II, Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Mabushi and Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminals, and several major roads connecting satellite towns and districts.

President Tinubu also laid the foundation for the design and construction of the electoral umpire’s headquarters annex in Maitama.

Residents have reacted positively. Senate President Akpabio praised the rapid development pace, recalling his tenure without such progress. Civil servant Ayinde Olaniyi highlighted the improved connectivity brought by the Wole Soyinka Way interchange bridge, while urging security vigilance around the area.

Uber driver Usman Ali expressed amazement at the new roads, especially the Idu-Zuba road, admitting it will take time to adapt but acknowledging Wike’s achievements despite political differences.

Residents of Pai town in Kwali Area Council expressed satisfaction with improved access to schools and health centers, appreciating ongoing road construction projects in their area.

Meanwhile, Kubwa residents in Bwari Area Council appealed to Minister Wike to extend similar development efforts to their community. They praised his work in neighboring areas but highlighted Kubwa as a large, populous suburb in need of urgent infrastructure upgrades.

Isaiah Jacob, a Kubwa resident, noted a newly constructed road connecting Zuba Spare Parts Market to Tunga Maje that had not been publicly highlighted but greatly improves local travel. He urged the minister to focus on Kubwa as budget permits.

Pastor Abraham Wetkos from Kubwa listed critical roads requiring urgent repair, including Gado Nasko Road, Arab Road (which remains incomplete), Chikakore Road, and Sultan Dasuki Road, appealing for government intervention.
