Payment of Outstanding Wage Awards to Federal Workers Begins – Federal Government.

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of the long-awaited N35,000 monthly wage award arrears to civil servants, according to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF).

Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations, confirmed in a statement that the five-month arrears would be disbursed in monthly installments of N35,000. The first payment will be made immediately after April 2025 salaries are released.

This payment is part of a wage relief package introduced to help civil servants cope with rising living costs following the removal of fuel subsidies and currency devaluation. The initiative, negotiated with labour unions in 2023, was intended as a temporary measure to cushion the economic impact of government reforms.

While partial payments had been made earlier, the delay in settling the full amount had drawn criticism from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), who viewed the delay as a breach of agreement.

With Labour Day approaching on May 1st, the timing of this disbursement is seen as a step to prevent industrial action. The OAGF reiterated the government’s commitment to honoring all agreements related to employee compensation and welfare, expressing hope that the move would improve morale and productivity across public service institutions.
