PDP Faces Internal Crisis Ahead of NEC Meeting as Wike Bows Out of Reconciliation Efforts.
Just a day before a pivotal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, tensions have escalated within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has withdrawn from ongoing peace efforts, citing betrayal and a breach of agreements among party stakeholders.
Wike specifically accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, a former ally and fellow member of the G5 group of governors, of undermining reconciliation efforts. In a statement titled *“PDP Crisis: My Position,”* Wike criticized Makinde for attempting to remove Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, despite a Supreme Court ruling confirming Anyanwu’s legitimacy. He also alleged that Makinde, alongside Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, organized a controversial meeting of South-East leaders threatening to exit the PDP if Uche Secondus was not reinstated.
The G5, once united in their dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership structure, is now deeply fractured. Wike claimed Makinde violated agreements reached during high-level meetings, including those held at former Senate President Bukola Saraki’s residence. These meetings had resulted in a consensus to recognize Anyanwu’s role and de-escalate legal disputes within the party.
However, Wike expressed frustration that the agreements were ignored even before implementation began. He cited procedural violations, such as a zonal congress invitation signed by an unauthorized official, as further signs of bad faith.
Reaffirming his long-term commitment to the PDP since 1998, Wike lamented that his loyalty had been met with repeated betrayal. He stated that while he made no personal demands, he could no longer support the current reconciliation framework.
Declaring his intent to “fight on until justice is attained,” Wike’s exit from the peace process is seen as a significant blow to party unity. Political analysts warn that this rift may lead to renewed internal conflicts and weaken the PDP ahead of upcoming elections and the 2027 cycle.
The NEC is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, where the full impact of the internal discord is expected to surface.
