PDP in Crisis: Can the Party Hold It Together Before 2027?
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing internal conflicts that have become a national spectacle, drawing attention from all corners of society. Once Nigeria’s dominant political party, the PDP is now battling internal divisions and defections, particularly to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). At the center of the storm is Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, whose actions are both controversial and influential within the party.
Tensions Boil Over at Abuja Meeting
On May 11, 2025, top PDP leaders, including governors and ex-governors, met at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja to address the party’s internal rifts. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, emphasized unity and announced the formation of a reconciliation and strategy committee ahead of the NEC meeting scheduled for May 27.
Despite the conciliatory tone, tensions remained high. The defection of three senators from Kebbi and rumors about Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno considering a move to the APC highlighted the party’s instability.
Wike’s Controversial Role
Wike’s late and dramatic arrival at the May 11 meeting caught attention. The next day, he defended his involvement with the APC-led government, insisting he remained loyal to the PDP but warning of the consequences of continued internal injustice and poor leadership.
Wike argued that his only “crime” was accepting a ministerial role in the APC administration and urged the party to return to honest self-assessment. However, many within the party remain skeptical of his intentions.
Board of Trustees Offers Hope
In a bid to restore stability, the PDP inaugurated 40 new members to its Board of Trustees (BoT) on May 12. The BoT, including prominent former governors, is expected to play a key role in reconciliation. Chairman Adolphus Wabara expressed confidence in the party’s resilience, while members like Eddy Olafeso and Jones Onyereri emphasized the need for unity, self-reflection, and a focus on economic justice.
Calls for Peace and Direction
Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and other senior officials stressed the importance of leadership, fairness, and unity in steering the party through its current challenges. Meanwhile, APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje mocked the PDP’s crisis, declaring the party “dead.”
Saraki Leads Reconciliation
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki now heads the reconciliation committee tasked with restoring peace and preparing for a successful NEC meeting. He is working to bridge the divide between key figures like Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Atiku, through his aide, reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP and democratic principles.
Grassroots Urge Reform
Party leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro and South East Vice Chairman Ali Odefa, called for adherence to the party’s constitution and prioritizing the interests of ordinary Nigerians over personal ambitions.
Despite ongoing defections and unrest, Governor Bala Mohammed insisted that any future alliances must come from a position of strength.
Outlook for 2027
As the PDP prepares for its NEC meeting on May 27, the outcome will determine whether the party can rebuild and present a credible challenge in the 2027 elections. The coming weeks are crucial for healing divisions and regaining public trust.
Conclusion
The PDP’s internal conflict mirrors a broader political uncertainty in Nigeria. With major players like Saraki, Atiku, Wike, and others shaping the party’s future, the challenge remains: can the PDP overcome its divisions and reconnect with the electorate before 2027?
