PDP in Disarray as Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Defects to APC.
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom is set to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at 12 noon today, causing a sharp divide among PDP stakeholders in the state.
The Governor will be received into the APC by key party figures, including the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, and Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State. The event is scheduled to take place at the Government House banquet hall in Uyo.
Although originally planned as a major political gathering, the defection ceremony is expected to be more subdued due to the ongoing Eid-el-Kabir holiday. Security presence around the Government House has been significantly increased, with heavy deployments of police and DSS personnel.
Sources indicate that several PDP leaders in Akwa Ibom are not in support of the Governor’s move to the APC. Among the notable dissenters is Emmanuel Enoidem, a former PDP National Legal Adviser and a key figure in Eno’s 2023 gubernatorial campaign. Enoidem has indicated that the PDP intends to remain active and will present candidates in the 2027 elections.
According to information obtained by reporters in Uyo, Governor Eno is expected to address a select group of journalists at 2 p.m. following his formal defection.
This political development marks a significant shift in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape and adds to the growing list of PDP governors who have joined the ruling party.
