PDP to Zone 2027 Presidential Ticket to the South – Wike.
Some senior members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have agreed that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket should be allocated to the southern region of Nigeria.
This resolutio
n was made during a meeting held in Abuja and hosted by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. In a statement issued after the meeting, Wike emphasized the importance of respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling and reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the party’s legitimate National Secretary.
The group also expressed support for the reconciliation committee led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, noting the need for unity and constitutional order within the party.
The communiqué highlighted several key points:
The ongoing internal crisis is due to the refusal of some members to follow the party’s constitution and the Supreme Court’s ruling, particularly concerning the position of National Secretary.
Stakeholders believe the party risks collapse if divisive and self-serving behaviors are not addressed urgently.
There is unanimous support for zoning the 2027 presidential candidacy to the South, in line with principles of fairness and federal character, especially after successive northern presidencies.
Only the recognized National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu, is authorized to issue official notices for meetings such as the National Convention, National Executive Committee (NEC), and National Working Committee (NWC). Any other notices or communications, including those sent to INEC, are considered invalid.
The constitution makes it clear that only a duly convened National Convention has the authority to remove the National Secretary.
The acting National Chairman and the National Secretary are urged to jointly notify INEC about the NEC meeting with an attached agenda, as required by law.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to the PDP and called on members to uphold constitutional values, avoid actions that could destabilize the party, and support ongoing reconciliation efforts.
Attendees at the meeting included former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), National Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, along with several current and former lawmakers from both federal and state levels.
