Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Pledges to Serve Only One Term.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially declared his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election. During a live session on X Spaces on Sunday night, Obi stated that if elected,
he would serve only one term of four years.
Addressing supporters both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, Obi made it clear that he was not interested in forming a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but expressed openness to coalition efforts—so long as they aim to solve Nigeria’s pressing issues.
“If any coalition is not about ending violence in Benue and Zamfara, reviving the economy, boosting local industry, and ensuring food security, then I’m not interested,” he said. “Nigeria is in crisis, and urgent action is needed.”
Obi pledged to stabilize the country within the first two years of his administration and called on citizens to support a new national direction. “We must rescue this country together. I believe leadership must be present and hands-on,” he added.
On internal disputes within the Labour Party, Obi revealed that steps were being taken to secure recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction, as directed by a Supreme Court ruling.
He also reaffirmed his support for power rotation between the North and South, citing his implementation of such a policy while serving as governor of Anambra State.
Responding to reports of President Tinubu’s overseas trip, Obi criticized the president’s absence from Nigerian states since taking office. “President Tinubu has not spent a night in any state outside Lagos since 2023. Yet he can spend 10 days in St. Lucia, a country the size of Ilorin,” Obi remarked.
As for his strategy for 2027, Obi emphasized a non-violent, transparent approach. “We’ll insist on accountability before any results are announced. Our votes in 2027 must—and will—count.”
He outlined his top priorities for the first 100 days in office: strengthening security, improving education, and tackling poverty. Obi also committed to clean governance, promising that his family would not interfere in public affairs and that national resources would go directly to critical sectors.
On political party loyalty, Obi took a firm stance: “No elected official will defect under my leadership. The era of political switching must end.”
He closed with sharp criticism of current governance practices. “While people are being killed in places like Benue and Borno, we see leaders commissioning bus stops and taking vacations. That’s unacceptable. Good governance starts with clear priorities.”
Obi vowed to reduce the cost of governance and fight corruption from day one. “My record in Anambra shows I lead by example. Anyone seeking to govern must be ready to make sacrifices and truly serve the people.”
