Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called on President Bola Tinubu to cut short his stay in France and return to Nigeria to confront the escalating violence and communal unrest plaguing the nation.
Obi made the appeal in a post shared on his official X account on Wednesday, expressing concern over the worsening security situation across the country.
His statement comes just days after the Presidency dismissed claims that Tinubu traveled to France for medical treatment. Presidential adviser Daniel Bwala clarified during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the trip was a working visit. This was in response to activist Omoyele Sowore’s allegation that the President was in France for health reasons.
Although presidential aide Bayo Onanuga mentioned Tinubu left the country on April 2 and is expected back in roughly two weeks, Sowore insisted on social media that the trip was medically motivated.
Obi, however, warned that the President’s absence during such a critical time could worsen the nation’s already fragile security. He highlighted that over 150 Nigerians have been killed in violent incidents during Tinubu’s time away, especially in Plateau and Zamfara states. He also pointed to recurring pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta and renewed insurgent attacks in Borno, as well as ongoing killings and abductions in the Southeast.
Obi urged Tinubu to return immediately, emphasizing that the nation is in dire need of leadership on the ground.
