Peter Obi’s Brother Challenges Lagos Property Demolition in Court.
Mr. Ndibe Obi, younger brother of former Labour Party pres
idential candidate Peter Obi and majority shareholder of Next Foods Ltd, has taken legal action over the demolition of a company property located in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to the company’s legal counsel, Chief Emeka Okpoko (SAN), legal proceedings are underway to challenge the demolition. He explained that several applications have been filed, including one to be officially joined in the case, another to halt further execution, and one to convert the initial legal process into a format where both parties can present their arguments.
Okpoko stated that the property was legally acquired in 2011, with the Lagos State governor’s consent granted in 2013. He emphasized that there had been no previous dispute over the land until the recent incident.
He further explained that the land’s history dates back to the Western Nigeria era, with ownership properly documented in a deed of assignment. The original court case that led to the demolition reportedly involved a woman, Deborah Olonwulogbo, who claimed she returned from caring for her sick husband to find squatters on the land.
Okpoko said he traced the demolition back to a court ruling from 2024, based on an originating summons filed in 2023. He claimed that the legal notice was not properly served, suggesting it may have been posted in an obscure location and quickly removed. Despite the court granting judgment, he argued that proper legal procedure wasn’t followed and that his client was never informed of the case.
He also questioned the issuance of a new Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) in 2025 for the property, despite Next Foods having held a valid C of O since 2011. He raised concerns about the relevance of a federal C of O in a state-controlled area like Ikeja GRA and pointed out that the area is already fully developed.
Okpoko added that Next Foods has consistently met its legal obligations, including filing annual returns with the Lagos State government, and plans to present all supporting documents in court.
The company is seeking to overturn the demolition and assert its ownership rights in court.
