Peter Rufai: Uchegbulam Advises Former Internationals to Seek Support for Health Challenges.

Following the sudden death of former national team goalkeeper Peter Rufai from an illness that was not publicly known, Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, former 1st Vice-Presiden

t of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has urged ex-Nigerian internationals to seek assistance from well-meaning individuals and corporate organizations if they face difficulties in life.

Uchegbulam emphasized that there is no shame in asking for help during health struggles and encouraged former players to leverage the goodwill they earned during their playing careers.

“I’m deeply saddened by Peter Rufai’s untimely death from illness, which many were unaware of. Rufai served Nigeria exceptionally well during his career,” Uchegbulam said.

Rufai, who guarded Nigeria’s goal for over 20 years, died last Thursday in Lagos after a prolonged illness. He was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, contributing to silver medals in 1984 and 1988, and playing a key role in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON championship win. He also featured in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, helping the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16 in both.

“Rufai gave great service to Nigeria, and he should have reached out for help when he was ill. I’m using this opportunity to encourage other former internationals to seek assistance if they face challenges,” said Uchegbulam, who also served as Chairman of the Imo State Football Association.

“These former players are our legends, and while we pray for their good health, sickness can affect anyone, especially as they grow older. There should be no stigma in asking for help.”

He added that while the NFF might not cover all medical expenses, it can appeal to well-meaning Nigerians or state governments to support affected players.

“We shouldn’t lose our legends to preventable causes,” he concluded.
