Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business will stop working on certain older smartphones, as Meta discontinues support for devices that no longer meet the app’s updated system requirements.
This move aligns with Meta’s efforts to boost security and optimize app performance on newer hardware and software. According to the company, this decision helps ensure better functionality and improved protection of user data.
The update primarily affects older devices, many of which are over ten years old. Users are encouraged to upgrade their phones to maintain access to WhatsApp.
Apple Devices:
WhatsApp will now require iOS 15.1 or later. The following iPhone models won’t meet this requirement, as they can only run iOS 12.5.7:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Android Devices:
As of January 1, 2025, WhatsApp ended support for Android devices running version 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier. Devices without official software updates can no longer use the app.
