Plateau Community Decries Killings as Death Toll Rises to 58.

Residents of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau St

ate have raised the alarm over ongoing violence in their communities, where recent attacks by armed gunmen have left 58 people dead and dozens of homes destroyed.

At a press briefing in Jos, Zang Davou, Chairman of the Plateau Youth Council (Riyom branch), described the situation as a growing humanitarian crisis. He reported that thousands have been displaced, many injured, and entire villages reduced to ruins.

Davou blamed the violence on what he called a long-standing and organized assault by armed Fulani militias, claiming such attacks have plagued the region since 2002. He said the recent incidents showed a disturbing increase in both planning and brutality.

In just a few weeks, 58 lives have been lost—men, women, children,” Davou said. “Some attackers are still using the phones of victims to answer calls from loved ones.

He added that 31 people are currently hospitalized with serious injuries, while over 82 houses and large areas of farmland have been destroyed. More than 15,000 people have been displaced, many of them now living without basic necessities such as shelter and food.

Davou acknowledged the efforts of security forces and government at all levels but argued that the current response falls short of what is needed. He reminded authorities that protecting citizens’ lives and property is a core constitutional duty, which, in Riyom, remains under serious threat.

The youth of Riyom are resilient, but that resilience is being stretched beyond its limits. We are tired—tired of burying our loved ones, of seeing our communities attacked and our future destroyed,” he said.

Davou urged the government to take stronger, more effective action to restore peace and security in the region.
