Police Disrupt PDP BoT Meeting; Bode George Accuses FG of Interference.

A planned meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) was disrupted on Monday as heavily armed security personnel blocked access to the venue at Wadata Plaza in Abuja.

The operatives, including members of the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), cited “orders from above” for their actions.

The meeting was expected to address the party’s ongoing leadership crisis, particularly concerning the controversial reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary and the preparations for the upcoming 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Among those denied entry was Chief Bode George, a senior BoT member and former Deputy National Chairman (South West). He criticized the move as an attack on democratic principles and accused the federal government of direct interference in opposition affairs.

Speaking to reporters, George expressed deep concern about what he described as rising authoritarianism. “Do you want to turn us into North Korea or Russia? Nigerians will not stand for this,” he said.

George also questioned the legitimacy of the security presence, dismissing claims that their deployment was due to conflicting notices. “This is clearly an attempt to silence the opposition,” he stated.

He insisted that the BoT would proceed with its meeting, calling the disruption unjustified and dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy. According to George, the PDP’s internal issues should be resolved through dialogue, not external pressure.

“The PDP is not a private organization. You fix its problems from within, not by using force,” he said, urging the federal government to shift focus to the country’s real challenges—economic instability, education, infrastructure, and more.

The meeting was eventually relocated to the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja’s Central Business District.

Observers and party loyalists fear this incident signals a troubling trend of shrinking space for dissent and political opposition in the country. George warned, “Everyone must be allowed to operate within the rule of law. This path leads to a dangerous place.”
