Political Defections Spark Concerns in Osun, Plateau, Anambra, Abia, and Enugu
The recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori from the PDP has heightened speculation that other governors from opposition parties may soon follow. Even before Oborevwori’s exit, indications suggested some governors were leaning toward the ruling APC, evident in their public statements and interactions. This has led to growing uncertainty in several states, particularly among opposition party members, despite denials from party officials.
Enugu: Political Allegiances in Question
Enugu State, traditionally a PDP stronghold, is now facing speculation that Governor Peter Mbah may switch to the APC, given his close ties with President Bola Tinubu. While APC leaders in the state have praised Mbah’s developmental efforts, party chairman Ugo Agballa strongly opposes any move to welcome him into the party. Despite these developments, PDP support in Enugu remains robust, making any potential defection uncertain.
Anambra: No Shift in Loyalty
In Anambra, Governor Charles Soludo of APGA is not expected to defect to the APC, despite his cordial relationship with President Tinubu. Soludo has criticized the APC’s lack of grassroots presence in the state, noting that it has failed to win any local elections. APGA leaders and supporters maintain confidence in Soludo’s loyalty to the party and his commitment to seeking a second term under its banner.
Abia: Minimal Impact from Delta Defections
In Abia, the defections in Delta are seen as irrelevant to the local political landscape. Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party shows no interest in switching parties, and public attention remains focused on his administration’s performance. While some former PDP members have joined the APC, the state’s politics appear largely unaffected by recent changes elsewhere.
Osun: Tensions Rise Over Potential Moves
In Osun, concerns are growing over Governor Ademola Adeleke’s possible defection, especially following the resignation of PDP lawmaker Oluwole Oke. Though Oke hasn’t confirmed plans to join another party, speculation about his and Adeleke’s next steps has intensified. Still, some party leaders downplay the significance of these events, insisting they are not indicative of a broader shift.
Overall, the political landscape remains fluid, with local dynamics and personal alliances playing a key role in shaping potential realignments.
