Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja Set to Become the Next Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 7, 2025, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja i

s next in line to ascend the throne as the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Ibadan’s traditional leadership system is distinct in Nigeria for its orderly and conflict-free method of succession. The Olubadan title alternates between two structured lines: the Otun line (civil chiefs) and the Balogun line (military chiefs). Chiefs in each line rise through a clearly defined hierarchy, and the most senior among them becomes eligible for the throne.

Currently, Ladoja holds the title of Otun Olubadan, the highest rank in the civil line, making him the rightful and expected successor.

   Who is Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja?

Born on September 25, 1944, Ladoja is a well-known figure in both traditional and political spheres. He served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006 and has since remained an influential leader in Ibadan.

As Otun Olubadan, he has played an active role in preserving Ibadan’s cultural legacy and maintaining order within the chieftaincy structure. For example, in May 2025, he represented the late Oba Olakulehin in suspending two family heads over allegations of land grabbing a move that reinforced his authority and commitment to justice.

With Ladoja’s expected ascension, the next Olubadan after him will emerge from the *Balogun* line, as part of the long-standing alternation between the two lines of succession.

   The Path to the Throne

Becoming Olubadan involves a multi-step confirmation process:

1. Verification by the Olubadan-in-Council: Senior chiefs must first confirm the successor’s eligibility.
2. Approval by the State Government: The Oyo State Governor currently Seyi Makinde must officially endorse the appointment.
3.  Coronation Ceremony: A formal ceremony follows, marking the official installation of the new monarch.

Ibadan’s stable and transparent succession system has helped prevent the kinds of leadership disputes seen in other Nigerian traditional institutions.

If crowned, Ladoja would become the first Olubadan to have previously served as a state governor a milestone in both traditional and political history.
