Rivers Crisis: Fubara, Amaewhule Move Toward Reconciliation as National Assembly Intervenes.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule appear to be taking meaningful steps toward resolving their longstanding political differences. The pair, along with other sta

te lawmakers, met recently in what sources describe as a constructive and cordial engagement.

Their rift dates back to March 18, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers due to escalating tensions. To stabilize the situation, Tinubu appointed former Naval Chief Vice Admiral Ibo-Ete Ibas as interim administrator for a six-month period aimed at facilitating reconciliation.

Multiple insider sources confirmed that the latest meeting, held in Abuja, ended on a positive note with Fubara and Amaewhule reportedly shaking hands and even sharing laughs.

A Turning Point in Rivers Politics

The Abuja meeting is believed to be the first serious attempt at reconciliation between the governor and the lawmakers, and comes on the heels of a public pledge by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the   National Assembly will play an active role in resolving the Rivers State crisis.

A source familiar with the discussions revealed that the governor has shown a genuine desire to restore peace, and that broader talks involving more stakeholders are expected to follow.

Although Fubara has previously met with President Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, this meeting with lawmakers is viewed as a critical step forward. Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has publicly stated that Fubara must directly engage with lawmakers, particularly over grievances such as unpaid salaries spanning more than two years.

      Positive Reactions from Stakeholders

The reconciliation effort has been well-received in Rivers State, with many—including members of Fubara’s own familydescribing it as a much-needed development.

Meanwhile, Akpabio, speaking at the  inauguration of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal in Abuja, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to restoring peace in Rivers:

“We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State. The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people.”

    Wike Criticizes Hypocrisy in Politics

In a separate remark, Minister Nyesom Wike criticized politicians who preach modesty but live lavishly. He recounted attending a campaign event in Anambra State where a politician widely known for promoting a humble lifestyle hosted guests with Cristal Brut, a luxury champagne.

“Why do we deceive Nigerians?” Wike asked. “What you preach is not what you practice… Don’t allow people to deceive you.”

He called on Nigerians to look beyond words and judge leaders based on sincerity, consistency, and courage to make tough decisions.

     Summary

Governor Fubara and Speaker Amaewhule have reopened dialogue amid the Rivers political crisis.
President Tinubu’s emergency intervention led to a caretaker administration and set the stage for reconciliation.
The National Assembly, under Akpabio’s leadership, is committed to guiding the peace process.
The meeting has been widely praised as a   positive step toward restoring stability in Rivers State.
Wike’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about integrity in Nigerian politics.
