Rivers Crisis: Peterside Criticizes Ibas Over Appointments

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, President, Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, retd., has been challenged to explain recent appointments of Local Government Sole administrators and others.

Atedo Peterside, founder of IBTC Bank and President of ANAP Foundation, has publicly criticized the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), questioning the legitimacy and method behind his recent appointments in the state.

Peterside expressed concern that Ibas, originally from Cross River State, is worsening an already tense situation in Rivers by appointing individuals he described as unqualified to sensitive positions, including in the local government and the state electoral commission.

Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Peterside said Ibas appeared to misunderstand the nature of his role, noting that instead of bringing stability, his actions may be exacerbating tensions.

He also questioned the legality of Ibas’ appointment and criticized the National Assembly for using a voice vote to confirm it, suggesting the process lacked transparency and credibility.

Appointments have been made without any clear process,” Peterside said. “There’s no evidence of public advertising, open nominations, or a search for qualified candidates within Rivers. We need to know how and why these individuals were selected.

He challenged Ibas to explain the criteria used in selecting those he appointed, emphasizing that Rivers people will not tolerate having unaccountable individuals imposed on them or their institutions.

Peterside called for immediate scrutiny of the administrator’s actions and warned that Rivers State cannot afford further instability caused by what he sees as externally driven decisions.
