Senate, African Diplomats Advocate for Return of Stolen Artefacts.

On Monday, the Nigerian Senate hosted African diplomats in Abuja to discuss the impact of colonial exploitation and push fo

r the repatriation of looted cultural artefacts.

The meeting, organized by the Senate Committee on Reparation and Repatriation, was led by its chairman, Senator Ned Nwoko. In his opening remarks, Nwoko emphasized the importance of addressing Africa’s shared colonial past, including slavery and plunder, and called for a united effort to seek both symbolic and material reparations.

“The legacy of colonization still affects our institutions, economies, and identities,” Nwoko said. “We must recover not only our artefacts but also our dignity and collective future.”

Senator Tahir Mongunu, standing in for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stressed that issues of reparations and repatriation are now central to international justice efforts. He assured that the Nigerian Senate would support diplomatic efforts through legislative means.

Envoys from Egypt, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe also addressed the gathering, each highlighting their country’s experiences with cultural theft and exploitation.

Egypt’s Ambassador, Mohammed Fouad, pointed out that many of Egypt’s ancient treasures are still housed in museums across the West. Tanzania’s Ambassador, Selestine Kekele, spoke about the partial return of human remains from Germany but lamented that valuable artefacts like dinosaur fossils remain abroad. He also recommended including Caribbean nations in future discussions due to their historical ties to Africa.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador, Maxwell Ranga, criticized the long-standing global silence on these issues, calling for a new, just economic framework for Africa. Senator Ipalibo Banigo cautioned against politicizing or tribalizing the call for restitution, urging unity in pursuit of justice.

“History should not divide us,” she said. “It should awaken us.”
