Sit-at-Home Orders Losing Influence in South-East – NSA Ribadu.
National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, stated on Thursday that the influence of sit-at-home orders imposed by terrorist groups in Nigeria’s South-East region is gradually weakening.
He made this statement during a security presentation at the All Progressives Congress national summit, highlighting the administration’s efforts under President Bola Tinubu.
Ribadu identified five main security challenges inherited by the current administration: Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, secessionist movements in the South-East, unrest in the Niger Delta, and communal conflicts in the North-Central.
According to him, coordinated operations by security agencies have led to a reduction in mass killings, kidnappings, and other crimes. He reported that over 13,500 Boko Haram insurgents have been killed in the past two years, with more than 11,000 weapons seized. Additionally, about 124,000 insurgents and their families have surrendered since Tinubu took office.
In the South-East, Ribadu noted that key members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) have been arrested or eliminated. Many police facilities have been rebuilt, and attacks on security personnel have decreased. As a result, normal life and economic activities are gradually returning.
In the North-West, he described the past year as a turning point in the fight against banditry, with over 11,000 hostages rescued and significant blows dealt to several notorious warlords.
