Sokoto Launches ₦22 Billion Housing Project to Address Urban Housing Shortage.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has initiated the construction of a ₦22 billion housing estate aimed at reducing the state’s urban housing deficit. The foundation-laying ceremony took

place at Wajake Village in Wamakko Local Government Area.

The planned estate will feature 500 modern residential units, including 300 three-bedroom and 200 four-bedroom flats. These homes will be sold on an owner-occupier basis to keep them affordable, especially for civil servants and low-income families.

Governor Aliyu described the initiative as a key part of his administration’s urban renewal strategy. “When we came into office, Sokoto State didn’t have a single government-owned house. This project directly addresses that gap,” he said.

The estate is located near the Sokoto New City and is being developed in partnership with Teamwork Construction Company Nigeria Limited. The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Governor Aliyu also announced the completion of another 500 housing units at Gidan Salanke, a project started under former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. Additionally, the state recently acquired 130 housing units from the Federal Ministry of Housing in Kwannawa.

“This is more than just a construction project. It’s about improving people’s quality of life,” the governor added. He urged contractors to maintain high standards and complete the project on schedule.

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who attended the event as a special guest, commended Governor Aliyu’s focus on people-centered development. He also acknowledged the role of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, in supporting regional progress and stability.

This housing development is part of a larger plan to modernize Sokoto’s infrastructure and enhance the state’s long-term social and economic outlook.
