Sokoto, UNICEF Begin Second Phase of Polio Vaccination Campaign.
The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched the second round of its polio Outbreak Response (OBR) vaccination campaign. The initiative aims to intensify efforts to eliminate the virus
from the state and the broader northwest region.
The campaign, which officially began in Shagari town, Shagari Local Government Area, will extend to all 244 wards across the state’s 23 local government areas. Over 2,700 trained health workers have been deployed to carry out the vaccination drive.
Community leaders are also playing a key role in the campaign, particularly in encouraging parents to vaccinate children under five—the group most at risk of contracting polio. This round of the OBR campaign has been given the theme “Dosage of Good News,” according to the UNICEF Sokoto Field Office.
At the launch event, Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar, stressed the state’s determination to completely eradicate the virus through improved access to vaccines and enhanced sanitation.
Dr. Umar also addressed the importance of countering misinformation and changing negative public perceptions about the polio vaccine. “We must shift mindsets and encourage families to accept the vaccine for the health of their children,” he said.
He praised UNICEF for its continued support and acknowledged the contributions of traditional leaders, local government officials, and ward heads in helping to improve vaccination coverage during previous campaigns.
UNICEF official Isah Ibrahim also spoke at the event, noting that community engagement remains essential to the success of the campaign. He emphasized the need for consistent and targeted efforts to stop the spread of polio.
The campaign is part of a broader national and international mission to fully eradicate polio in Nigeria.
