Soyinka Urges Tinubu to Investigate Unresolved Deaths Linked to June 12 Struggle.
Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on President Bola Tinubu to
launch formal investigations into the unresolved and suspicious deaths of prominent figures connected to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, including journalist Dele Giwa, former Attorney General Bola Ige, and activist Kudirat Abiola.
Soyinka made this appeal during a discussion with journalists at Freedom Park in Lagos on Saturday. The event, themed “June 12: Romancing the Embers,” commemorated the annulled 1993 presidential election, now recognized as a national democracy day in Nigeria.
He emphasized that while June 12 is symbolically important, its true meaning should be reflected in a commitment to justice, particularly for those who lost their lives fighting for democratic ideals.
Soyinka announced he would dedicate any June 12-related honors to the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, describing him as a fearless and principled advocate for democracy and human rights.
Addressing other issues, Soyinka criticized former military leader Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, A Journey in Service, calling it incomplete. He urged Babangida to publish a follow-up that provides a more comprehensive account of the events surrounding the 1993 election annulment. He also suggested that Babangida’s book should be read alongside Professor Omo Omoruyi’s The Tale of June 12, which offers insider insight into that period.
Soyinka insisted that Babangida owes it to the nation to fully disclose the roles played by key individuals—including military officers, civilians, and traditional rulers—in the election annulment.
“He must finish telling the story. We already know some of those involved. It’s time for full accountability,” Soyinka concluded.
