Speed Darlington Defies NAPTIP Arrest Warrant.
Nigerian entertainer Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, has publicly rejected a warrant issued by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in
Persons (NAPTIP) relating to allegations of rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.
In a video posted on YouTube shortly after the agency’s announcement, Okoye denied committing any crime and dismissed the charges as unfounded. He accused NAPTIP of using him to gain social media attention and questioned the evidence behind the allegations.
“I’m not coming. I have not committed any crime. All I did was speak,” he said. He described the agency’s summons as an attempt to manipulate him psychologically and demanded payment of 2.5 million naira plus travel expenses if he were to appear.
Referring to a controversial livestream, Okoye insisted there was no evidence against him, calling the investigation a waste of his time.
NAPTIP declared Okoye wanted after he repeatedly failed to respond to summons following a viral video in which he claimed to have had sex with a 15-year-old girl. The video, streamed on Children’s Day, sparked public outrage and drew criticism from women’s rights groups and the Lagos State government.
The agency initially invited Okoye to appear at its Abuja office on May 30. He declined, citing prior commitments and proposing a new date, June 26. NAPTIP rejected the postponement and set a final deadline of June 2, which Okoye also missed.
In a letter, NAPTIP stressed the urgency of the matter and warned that noncompliance could lead to legal action.
Okoye later claimed the video was a prank designed to promote his music, stating, “I need controversy to eat.” Critics condemned the trivialization of child sexual abuse as harmful and unacceptable.
NAPTIP maintains that if proven true, Okoye’s statements could violate the Trafficking in Persons Act and the Cybercrime Act, both enacted in 2015.
Reports suggest that Okoye has since left Nigeria, posting a video indicating he moved from Lagos to New York.
