Sri Lanka Bids Farewell to Legendary Actress Malini Fonseka.
Colombo, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved film icons, Malini Fonseka, who passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 78. Thousands of fans
gathered in Colombo on Monday to pay their final respects during a state funeral at Independence Square, where she was cremated with full honors.
For many Sri Lankans, Fonseka wasn’t just an actress—she was a symbol of resilience, beauty, and grace. Admirers like Srimathi Mallika Kaluarachchi, 68, recalled the emotional connection audiences felt toward her, even as children. “We cried when something happened to her on screen,” Kaluarachchi said. “That’s how deeply we felt for her.”
Malini Fonseka’s career spanned more than five decades, with over 140 films to her name. Known as the “queen of Sinhala cinema,” she gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s through powerful portrayals of women navigating social and emotional struggles. Among her most iconic roles were those in Nidhanaya (1972), Thushara (1973), Eya Dan Loku Lamayek (1975), and Bambaru Avith (1978).
She was also a pioneer behind the camera, becoming Sri Lanka’s first female television drama director in the 1980s—a time when such roles were rare for women. Fonseka received multiple accolades, including five Best Actress awards at the Presidential Film Awards. Internationally, she was recognized at the Moscow and New Delhi film festivals.
In addition to her film work, Fonseka ventured into politics, serving as a member of parliament from 2010 to 2015.
During the funeral, a large screen displayed scenes from her films, while music from her movie soundtracks played. Actress and musician Ivanka Peiris described her as a powerful influence for women in the entertainment industry. “She was everything for us. There will be no other queen like her,” Peiris said.
Malini Fonseka’s final appearance was in the 2024 music video *Eya Wasanathaya Nowe*, where she portrayed a woman reflecting on lost love. Though she is gone, her legacy continues to inspire generations.
She was a bridge across generations,” said Prabuddhika Kannagara, a 27-year-old teacher. “She was a star for both my mother and me.
