Students Protest Against Renaming of The Polytechnic Ibadan.

Students of The Polytechnic Ibadan protested on Tuesday at the Oyo State Government Secretariat to oppose the recent decision to rename their institution after former governor Omololu Olunloyo.

The students carried placards urging Governor Seyi Makinde to reverse the renaming and restore the polytechnic’s original name. They appealed to the governor to protect the institution’s legacy, which they believe is tied to its current name recognized worldwide.

Led by the Students Union Government President, Olamide Oladipupo, the students expressed concern that the change diminishes the school’s historical identity.

In response, Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant to the Government on Security, addressed the students and called for calm.

The renaming took place on June 26, 2025, during the funeral service for Omololu Olunloyo, who passed away on April 6, 2025. Olunloyo was not only a former governor of Oyo State but also the pioneer principal of the polytechnic.

Governor Makinde described Olunloyo as a scholar, statesman, technocrat, and cultural advocate, highlighting his distinguished life and contributions.

The decision to rename the polytechnic has sparked controversy, as similar changes at other institutions like the University of Abuja and the University of Lagos have faced strong opposition from current and former students.
