Tanzanian Professor Mohamed Janabi Takes Office as WHO Regional Director for Africa.
Professor Mohamed Janabi from Tanzania has officially assumed his role as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. He took office on June 30, 2025, bringing more than 30 years of experience in clinical medicine, public health, health policy, and systems development.
Janabi was elected to the position in May 2025 during a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa held in Geneva. His appointment follows the selection of Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu as Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme. Dr. Ihekweazu had been serving as the acting regional director before Janabi’s election.
On social media, Janabi described his new role as an important responsibility, pledging to focus on strengthening healthcare systems, ensuring equitable access to medical services, and fostering collaboration throughout Africa. He expressed appreciation to Dr. Ihekweazu for his leadership during the transition.
Janabi is a renowned cardiologist and health strategist with a strong record in advancing healthcare innovation and collaboration across the continent. His goals include achieving universal health coverage, reducing maternal and child deaths, addressing communicable and non-communicable diseases, and building climate-resilient health systems. He also prioritizes emergency preparedness and domestic investment in healthcare.
Before his WHO appointment, Janabi served as Senior Health Advisor to the President of Tanzania and was the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, the country’s main referral hospital. He also founded and led the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute, establishing it as a leading cardiovascular center in the region.
