Tayo Faniran: “I’m Built for the Screen”.

Tayo Faniran, known for his breakout appearance on *Big Brother Afr

ica Season 9*, reflects on his journey from a small town in Oyo State to becoming a prominent figure in modeling, reality TV, and Nollywood. In a candid interview, he shares insights into his roots, his passion for acting, and the evolution of his career.

  Early Life and Career Beginnings
Faniran grew up in Oyo and proudly identifies as an “original Oyo boy.” He didn’t see Lagos until he was 18, but his dreams of fame and creativity began much earlier. Pursuing a path outside of the traditional professions like law or medicine was unusual where he came from, but he was determined to follow his passion.

In 2008, he moved to South Africa to pursue modeling and was quickly featured on runways and in fashion magazines by 2009. Still, his ambitions stretched beyond modeling—he consistently sought larger platforms.

Big Brother and the Turning Point
Tayo auditioned for Big Brother Africa for five years before finally being selected in 2014. His performance, rich in cultural expression and self-awareness, distinguished him as someone grounded in his heritage. Despite show rules against using native languages, he often incorporated Yoruba proverbs and offered English translations, reinforcing his identity.

   From Modeling to Acting
Tayo transitioned into acting with the same determination that fueled his modeling career. His performance in Gangs of Lagos was a turning point. It earned him respect typically reserved for long-standing actors and opened doors to roles in Labake Olododo, Ada Omo Daddy, and the upcoming Anikulapo.

He notes that his preparation—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—helped him seize each opportunity fully. According to Tayo, when a role presents itself, he gives it everything, even if it means sacrificing sleep or comfort.

  Cultural Identity and Artistic Purpose
Tayo credits his deep connection to Yoruba culture as central to his success. From sitting with elders to absorbing traditional wisdom, he maintains that cultural roots are essential. He views his film work as a chance to make statements, not just fill roles.

  Discovering His Acting Talent
Though he started with modeling, Tayo always knew he had a performer’s spirit. He took acting seriously after relocating to South Africa, where he trained and refined his skills. Even before formal training, he had participated in drama and church activities from a young age.

  Body Enhancements and Public Perception
Tayo is open about making personal enhancements—he’s had his teeth and beard line done, among others. For him, these changes are about self-expression and not dissatisfaction with his natural features. He views body modifications as a choice people make when they can afford it, not as vanity or insecurity.

  Confidence and Global Perspective
Having competed with models from all over the world, Tayo says his confidence comes from experience, not ego. He believes in standing out and constantly improving himself, not comparing with others. “When I walk into a room, I’m not competing; I’ve already done that behind the scenes,” he explains.

  Maturity and a New Mindset
Although once fiery and outspoken, Tayo now describes himself as calmer and more reflective. He believes growth requires adapting and focusing on personal peace rather than trying to fight every battle or prove every point.

  Looking Ahead
Tayo’s career continues to grow, with multiple projects in the pipeline. He believes his journey is a testament to divine timing and preparation meeting opportunity. “I’ve always known I was made for the screen,” he concludes.
