Tinubu Appoints New Governing Council Members for Three Federal Universities.
On May 27, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the appointment
of new Governing Council members for three federal universities: the University of Abuja, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU).
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the appointments are part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s federal university system.
This development follows the February dissolution of the University of Abuja’s Governing Council and the removal of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi, due to concerns over the legitimacy of her appointment.
The new members appointed to the University of Abuja’s council include:
 Professor Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan (South-South)
 Dr. Adedeji Adefuye (Southwest)
 Professor Sarki Abba Abdulkadir (Northwest)
 Professor Aminu Mohammed Dukku (Northeast)
For the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the new council members are:
 Barrister Ogbonna Eugene Odo (Southeast)
 Muhammad Inuwa Tahir (Northwest)
At Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the appointed members are:
Dr. Nkem Okeke, former Deputy Governor of Anambra State (Southeast)
 Ofoke Chukwuma Charles Ugbala (Southeast)
 Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa (Northwest)
 Nojeeb Oriola Agunbiade (Southwest)
These appointments are intended to enhance governance, accountability, and strategic direction in federal universities, aligning them with national development objectives.
