Tinubu Halts Property Revocations in FCT, Gives 14-Day Grace Period.
President Bola Tinubu has suspended the ongoing revocation an
d sealing of properties in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to unpaid ground rent, granting affected owners a 14-day window to settle their debts and regularize their documents.
This was disclosed by Chijioke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land Administration in the FCT, during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
He said that as of May 26, 2025, enforcement actions had begun on 4,794 properties whose owners had failed to pay ground rent for periods ranging from 10 to 43 years. The affected properties include those owned by individuals, corporate bodies, and government agencies.
Thanks to President Tinubu’s intervention, a two-week grace period has been extended to these property holders to clear their outstanding rents and penalties. The penalties vary by location:
Central Area : N5 million penalty plus owed rent
Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, Guzape**: N3 million penalty
Wuse I, Garki I, Garki II**: N2 million penalty
Additionally, buyers who have not yet registered their property transfers are required to obtain the Minister’s Consent and register their Deeds of Assignment within the same 14-day window.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also granted a 14-day grace period for all property owners in the territory to pay their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) and Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) fees. Failure to comply could lead to the revocation of land titles.
The Minister urged residents to ensure timely payment of all applicable fees to support government development efforts in the capital.
